Long before Sam Heughan ever walked its courtyard, Midhope Castle had already stood for more than 500 years. The first written record of the tower house dates to 1458, when a laird named John Martyne lived here until his death two decades later; the Drummond family remodelled it in 1582, carving their initials into a datestone that's still visible at the gate today. By 1678 the castle had passed to the Hope family, who later built the much grander Hopetoun House nearby — Midhope became estate housing for Hopetoun's farm workers, with 53 people recorded living inside its walls in 1851, before it was eventually abandoned and left semi-derelict until a restoration began in 1988.
Falkland Palace has an equally real and much grander royal pedigree. A 12th-century hunting lodge on this site grew into a castle held by the Earls of Fife, and from 1424 it became a favourite country retreat of the Stewart kings — James I and his successors came here to hunt deer and fly falcons in the surrounding royal park. Mary, Queen of Scots herself treated Falkland as a genuine refuge, retreating here more than once from the political turmoil of her reign. Technically still a Crown property, the palace has been cared for by the National Trust for Scotland since 1952.
Both buildings owe their modern fame to Outlander, where Midhope stands in as Jamie Fraser's ancestral home, Lallybroch. Falkland's own role in the series is a little different from what it's sometimes described as: rather than the fictional village of Cranesmuir, which was actually filmed in nearby Culross, Falkland's own streets doubled as 1940s Inverness — the town where Claire and Frank stayed before her journey through the standing stones.
