Hopetoun House is a genuine two-act building project spanning nearly 70 years. Sir William Bruce designed the original house for Charles Hope, beginning work in 1699 and finishing in 1707 — a relatively modest Scots mansion that nonetheless contains some of the finest carved woodwork and painted ceilings of its era. In 1721, with Hope now the 1st Earl of Hopetoun, the architect William Adam was brought in to make the house dramatically grander: he added a full extra storey, extended the east front from 13 to 17 bays, and tore down Bruce's original wings in favour of much larger pavilions.
Adam died in 1748 with the work unfinished, and it was completed by his sons, John and Robert Adam, who designed much of the interior decoration seen today. The house wasn't fully finished until 1767. Remarkably, Hopetoun has never left the family it was built for — the Hope family still hold the hereditary titles of Marquess of Linlithgow and Earl of Hopetoun, and their descendants live on the wider estate today.
That estate is also where this tour's other real stop, Midhope Castle, stands. The much older 15th-century tower house — first recorded in 1458 — was folded into the Hopetoun Estate in 1678 and later used to house farm workers from the grand house up the road. It's best known today as Outlander's Lallybroch, and this tour's genuine distinction is inside access to the castle itself, not just the courtyard view most visitors get from the road outside.
