Doune Castle is the one real building most responsible for this tour's premise — a genuinely complete 14th-century courtyard castle, built for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, that has spent the last half-century playing a remarkable string of other characters on screen.
Its best-known film role predates any of this tour's other productions: in 1975, Monty Python and the Holy Grail shot its kitchen, courtyard, and Great Hall here — including the famous 'Knights of the Round Table' song — and, on a famously tight budget, reused the same real stone walls to stand in for several different fictional castles within the one film.
Doune's connection to Game of Thrones is real but worth stating precisely: it was used for exterior courtyard shots and a feast scene in the show's original pilot episode, filmed as a stand-in for Winterfell. That pilot was judged unsatisfactory by HBO and roughly 90% of it was reshot elsewhere before the series ever aired, so while Doune genuinely appears in Game of Thrones' production history, it isn't part of the Winterfell seen in the broadcast series.
The castle's other real screen credit, Outlaw King (2018), cast it as 'Douglas castle and church' in David Mackenzie's film about Robert the Bruce — a production that, like this tour, leaned on the same small handful of intact Scottish castles (Doune, Blackness, Linlithgow Palace) simply because genuinely well-preserved medieval buildings are in short supply in Scotland, which is why so many big-budget medieval productions film in Eastern Europe instead. Doune, alongside Midhope Castle as Lallybroch, is the real reason this one building anchors several different fictional worlds.
