It marks the site of the Old Tolbooth, Edinburgh's medieval town hall, courthouse, and prison, which stood there for more than 400 years before being demolished in 1817 as unfit for use. The "Heart of Midlothian" name comes from Sir Walter Scott's 1818 novel of the same title, published a year after the building came down.

About This Tour
A confirmed private tour for your group, offering "an intimate atmosphere you won't find in larger, shared groups." This is explicitly confirmed as private: "an intimate atmosphere you won't find in larger, shared groups." Real stops include Old Town execution sites and Tolbooth Prison history.
The Old Tolbooth stood on the Royal Mile for more than four centuries — built around 1386-1400 and substantially rebuilt in 1561 — serving at various times as Edinburgh's town hall, courthouse, and main jail, with torture and corporal punishment carried out inside and, from 1785, public executions held just outside its walls. By the early 1800s it was judged too dilapidated and unsuitable to keep using, and it was demolished in 1817. Its site is marked today by a heart-shaped setting of cobblestones in the pavement near St Giles' — the "Heart of Midlothian," a name borrowed a year later by Sir Walter Scott for his 1818 novel of the same name.
Down the hill, Grassmarket carried a parallel role as Edinburgh's official public execution ground from 1660 to 1784, with a permanent gallows at its eastern end. During "the Killing Time" of the 1660s-1680s, more than a hundred Covenanters were hanged here for refusing to accept royal authority over the Church of Scotland; a memorial to them has stood in the square since 1937.
Together, these two real sites trace the city's actual machinery of law, punishment, and resistance across several centuries — not a single plaque, but a route through where Edinburgh genuinely tried, jailed, and executed people for most of its early modern history.
