Glencoe's real history includes one of the most notorious episodes in Scotland's past. In the early hours of 13 February 1692, soldiers under Captain Robert Campbell — who had been quartered with, and fed by, the MacDonalds of Glencoe for nearly two weeks under the ordinary rules of Highland hospitality — turned on their hosts on government orders and killed an estimated 38 men, women and children. The killings were authorised from Edinburgh and London after clan chief MacIain missed a deadline to swear allegiance to King William III, and they're remembered less as a clan feud than as a calculated breach of trust by the state itself.
Loch Ness, the tour's other focus, carries a very different kind of story — the Loch Ness Monster is folklore, not fact, though the legend's modern form dates back to real, documented sightings: Aldie Mackay's report of a whale-like creature in the loch in spring 1933, followed later that year by George Spicer's roadside sighting and a photograph taken by Hugh Gray that was later suggested to show nothing more than a dog or an otter. No scientific evidence has ever confirmed anything living in the loch beyond its known fish and wildlife.
Travelling exclusively as your own party means there's time to take both stories in properly — the genuine, sobering history at Glencoe and the playful, unresolved legend of Loch Ness — rather than rushing between them on a shared coach timetable.
