Culloden, fought on 16 April 1746 near Inverness, was the last pitched battle fought on British soil and the decisive end of the Jacobite rising of 1745. A government army under the Duke of Cumberland broke Charles Edward Stuart's Jacobite force in under an hour; historians' estimates vary, but most put Jacobite losses at somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 killed or wounded, against only around 50 dead on the government side. The defeat ended any realistic hope of restoring the exiled Stuart dynasty to the British throne.
Clava Cairns, a short distance away, reaches back far further — these Bronze Age passage graves at Balnuaran of Clava were built around 2500 BCE, with later additions dating to roughly 2000 BCE, and the site was used for burial and ritual for well over a thousand years. The three surviving cairns, two of them passage graves, are surrounded by standing stones that archaeologists believe were deliberately aligned with the midwinter sunset — a layer of prehistoric engineering that predates Culloden by nearly 4,000 years.
Loch Ness closes the day by tracing the Great Glen Fault, the geological scar running more than 60 miles across the Highlands that the loch fills along almost its full straight length — a reminder that this single route covers not just two very different chapters of human history, but a slice of deep geological time as well.
