About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, with a real boat trip on Loch Ness included. This is a private tour for your group only, with a real boat ride on Loch Ness genuinely included in the tour.

Being out on the water is the real way to appreciate Loch Ness's scale, which numbers alone don't quite capture. It holds around 7.5 cubic kilometres of water — more than every lake in England and Wales combined — reaching a maximum depth of roughly 230 metres. Yet for all that volume, it's only the second-largest Scottish loch by surface area, after Loch Lomond; its sheer depth is what gives it the largest water volume of any loch in Britain.

The loch's most famous resident has never been confirmed by any of the real searches carried out over the decades. The largest, Operation Deepscan in 1987, sent a coordinated line of 20 boats down the loch using sonar; the search picked up three unexplained contacts larger than a shark but smaller than a whale, but nothing was ever identified as a living creature. Loch Ness's peat-stained water doesn't help — tannins washed in from surrounding bogs make it so murky that underwater visibility can drop to just a few feet, which is as good an explanation as any for why the legend has survived so long.

A boat trip won't settle the debate, but it does put you on the same dark water that every sonar survey, sighting and photograph has ever come from — a different, more immersive way to experience Loch Ness than simply viewing it from the shore road.
