St Andrews has been linked to golf for longer than almost anywhere else on earth. The earliest surviving documentary evidence — Archbishop Hamilton's charter of 1552 — confirms the townspeople's right to play golf on the links, though a form of the game is thought to have been played here since at least the 1400s. The Old Course itself was trimmed from an original 22 holes down to today's standard 18 in 1764, a decision that effectively set the template every golf course in the world has followed since. Alongside the fairways, the ruined St Andrews Cathedral and Castle recall the town's earlier life as Scotland's medieval ecclesiastical capital, long before golf gave it a second identity.
Falkland Palace tells a different, equally real story — of Scotland's royal Stewart dynasty at leisure rather than at war. What began as a hunting lodge for the Earls of Fife was rebuilt by James IV and James V between 1497 and 1541 into one of the finest Renaissance palaces in Britain, a country retreat close enough to Edinburgh for the court yet remote enough to feel like an escape. The palace still holds the world's oldest real (or 'royal') tennis court still in use, built for James V in 1539, and it was a favourite residence of his daughter, Mary, Queen of Scots.
Kingsbarns Distillery, the day's final stop, has a far more recent and quietly personal history. Founder Douglas Clement, a former caddie at the famous Kingsbarns Links course nearby, kept hearing visiting golfers ask why there was no whisky distillery in the home of golf — so in 2014 he converted East Newhall Farm, a working farmstead dating to around 1800, into a real, operating distillery in Fife's East Neuk. The first spirit ran off the stills that same year, and the inaugural single malt, 'Dream to Dram', was finally released in 2018 once it had cleared the legally required years of cask maturation.
