The Kelpies are a genuinely modern Scottish landmark: two 30-metre steel horse heads, each weighing around 300 tonnes, designed by sculptor Andy Scott and completed in October 2013 before officially opening to the public in April 2014. They stand in the Helix parkland near Falkirk, at the entrance to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and take their name from kelpies — shape-shifting water spirits of Scottish folklore often said to appear as horses. Scott intended them as a tribute less to myth than to history: the real Clydesdale heavy horses that once hauled barges and ploughed fields across industrial Scotland.
Callendar House, included on this tour, has a core tower house dating to the 14th century, later rebuilt in the 19th century in a French Renaissance style. Across roughly 600 years it has hosted Mary, Queen of Scots on a state visit in the 1560s and Bonnie Prince Charlie, who stayed there before the 1746 Battle of Falkirk — and it has also seen real violence: Oliver Cromwell's forces stormed the house in July 1651, killing 62 men. The Roman Antonine Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage frontier built roughly 20 years after the better-known Hadrian's Wall, runs directly across the Callendar estate.
Stirling Castle closes out the day from its commanding position above the River Forth, chosen by medieval kings for exactly the reason it's worth visiting today — few vantage points in central Scotland take in so much real history, ancient and modern, in a single sweep of the eye.
