Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, for your group only.
Yes, genuinely built around your interests.
The Old Town grew organically along a medieval ridge on Castle Rock, a 350-million-year-old volcanic plug, which forced building upward rather than outward. The New Town, by contrast, was deliberately planned from 1767 as an ordered Georgian grid on flatter ground nearby. Together they were inscribed as a single UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 specifically for that contrast.

About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, with a real local host customizing the route to your interests. This is a private tour for your group only. A real local host customizes the bespoke route to your own interests, covering Edinburgh's highlights and hidden gems.
Edinburgh's Old Town sits on Castle Rock, the eroded plug of a volcano that was last active roughly 350 million years ago, during the early Carboniferous period. The hard dolerite core resisted the glaciers that later scraped across the landscape, protecting a long tail of softer rock to the east and leaving the dramatic crag-and-tail ridge that the Old Town still cascades down today — it's the reason the city looks the way it does before a single building was ever put up.
What was built on top of that ridge, and later beside it, is unusual enough that UNESCO inscribed Edinburgh's Old and New Towns together as a single World Heritage Site in 1995 — recognising the contrast between the tight, medieval Old Town and the ordered Georgian New Town, laid out from 1767 onward as one of Britain's most complete examples of planned town design. More than three-quarters of the buildings inside that World Heritage boundary are protected as being of special architectural or historic interest.
Because this particular tour is built around whatever you're curious about rather than a fixed script, your host has that whole contrast to work with — narrow closes and centuries-old tenements on one side of town, broad Georgian crescents on the other, plus whichever quieter corners a group with more time wants to go looking for.
