The Falls of Dochart, in the village of Killin, is where the River Dochart runs through a short, turbulent set of rapids at the meeting point of two rivers and the western end of Loch Tay. For centuries this was the heart of Clan MacNab territory — their name comes from the Gaelic Mac an Aba, 'son of the abbot' — and the clan's ancient burial ground still sits on Inchbuie, a small island in the river just below the falls, where nine clan chiefs are buried.
Rannoch Moor is one of Britain's genuinely wild landscapes: roughly 20 square miles of blanket bog sitting on impermeable granodiorite rock left behind by retreating glaciers around 25,000–22,000 years ago. Because water can't drain through the granite beneath it, the moor is the largest continuous area of blanket bog in the United Kingdom, dotted with scattered Scots pines that are genuine remnants of the ancient Caledonian Forest that once covered much of the Highlands.
Glencoe itself sits inside the collapsed remains of an ancient volcanic caldera, its steep rock walls formed by repeated eruptions and subsidence hundreds of millions of years ago — terrain that stays genuinely remote even today, with few roads cutting through it. That's the real reason this route runs in a Land Rover rather than a standard coach: much of this landscape was built for exactly this kind of rugged, go-anywhere travel, not for tour buses.
