Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, for your group only.
A real, genuine cluster of independent Edinburgh gin distilleries.
The current wave of Edinburgh gin distilleries is genuinely recent — Pickering's, founded in 2013, was the first new distillery in the city in over 150 years, with Holyrood Distillery following in 2019. The area has much older distilling roots, though: nearby Sciennes was home to Edinburgh's last single-malt whisky distillery, which closed in 1925.

About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, through the real Gin Triangle, with genuine independent distilleries and bars. This is a private tour for your group only, through Edinburgh's genuine Gin Triangle — real independent distilleries and bars.

Edinburgh's so-called Gin Triangle is centred on the southside of the city, historically anchored by the Meadows — the park that once held the area's original water source, used by distillers here as far back as the 1700s and 1800s. That water, and the area's long brewing and distilling heritage, is part of why the city's modern gin revival took root in exactly this corner of town rather than anywhere else.

Pickering's Gin, one of the triangle's real producers, was founded in 2013 by Marcus Pickering and Matt Gammell — the first new distillery to open in Edinburgh in over 150 years. They set up inside Summerhall, the former Royal School of Veterinary Studies, converting its old animal kennels into a working distillery, and based their recipe on a nine-botanical formula reportedly found on a piece of notepaper dated July 1947 from a distiller named Ghopal.

Holyrood Distillery, which opened in 2019 near Holyrood Park, produces both gin and whisky and represents the newest chapter of this revival, while nearby Sciennes marks its older bookend: the site of the last single-malt whisky distillery to close in Edinburgh, back in 1925. Visiting both ends of that timeline in one afternoon, guided by someone who actually lives and drinks in the city, gives real shape to what's otherwise just a scattering of modern tasting rooms.
