This tour pairs St Andrews with the wider stretch of coastline known as the East Neuk of Fife — "neuk" being Scots for corner or nook, a fitting description for this tucked-away run of harbour villages between St Andrews and Edinburgh on the Firth of Forth. It's a genuinely different lens on the region than a golf-focused day, tracing working harbours and fishing heritage that long predate St Andrews' modern fame.
Herring has been fished on the Firth of Forth since medieval times, but the industry here exploded in the 19th century, when improvements in boat design and transport turned Scotland's herring fishery into the largest in the world by the late 1800s. East Neuk crews and harbours were major contributors to that boom, and until the 1920s it was local women — known as "herring lassies" — who gutted and packed the catch, some travelling to herring ports right around the British coast to follow the season's work.
The East Neuk's royal history runs deep too: Crail, one of the villages along this coast, is the oldest Royal Burgh in the area, its charter confirmed by Robert the Bruce himself at Stirling in 1310. Stone harbour walls, net stores, and fishermen's cottages along this coastline are the visible legacy of an industry that, at its peak, rivalled anything happening on St Andrews' famous links just up the road.
