East Lothian's coastline is sometimes called Scotland's Golf Coast, and the claim holds up: Muirfield, near the village of Gullane, is home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, whose continuous records date back to 1744, making it the world's oldest verified golf club. The course has hosted the Open Championship 16 times. This same stretch of coast holds a genuinely unusual concentration of links courses, a legacy of centuries of golf being played on this particular kind of sandy, grass-covered coastal land.
The region's real character runs deeper than golf. East Lothian is the birthplace of John Muir, born in Dunbar in 1838 before his family emigrated to the United States — where he went on to found the Sierra Club and is widely credited as the driving force behind the creation of Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks, earning him the title 'father of the national parks.' His childhood landscape along this coast is part of the same shoreline this tour explores.
East Lothian also carries its own real Jacobite history, distinct from the Highlands' better-known battles: the Battle of Prestonpans, fought here on 21 September 1745, was Bonnie Prince Charlie's first major victory of the rising, won in barely ten minutes against a larger government force. Between its golf courses, coastline and quieter historical sites, this route covers genuinely different ground from the standard Highlands day trip — without needing the long drive west or north to do it.
