About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, through the real Water of Leith walkway and the genuine Royal Botanic Garden. This is a private tour for your group only, from Edinburgh Walks. Real stops include the Water of Leith walkway and the genuine Royal Botanic Garden — genuinely off the standard tourist track.
The Water of Leith Walkway follows Edinburgh's own river for roughly 19 to 20 kilometres (about 12.8 miles) between Balerno and Leith, much of it well away from traffic and recognised as an Urban Wildlife Site — a real home to kingfishers, herons, otters, and brown trout along a route that cuts straight through a capital city without feeling much like one.
At the far end of the walk sits the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, founded in 1670 and one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain, second only to Oxford's. It's moved sites four times over its history chasing cleaner air and more room, settling into its current 70-plus-acre home at Inverleith from 1820, with the entire living collection carried across the city by hand and cart over three years before the move was finished.
The combination genuinely earns the name "country in the city": a wooded river corridor with real wildlife, followed by a world-class botanic collection, both reachable on foot without leaving Edinburgh's own boundaries.
