Built between 1729 and 1739 to a design by Edward Lovett Pearce, it was the world's first purpose-built bicameral parliament building, housing the Irish Parliament until it voted itself out of existence under the 1800 Act of Union. The building was sold to the Bank of Ireland in 1803 on one condition: that its interior be altered so it could never again serve as a debating chamber.
