Dublin's medieval defences started as simple earthen banks, but between 1100 and 1125 the city replaced them with proper stone walls - a real response to outside threats of the time, including the Norwegian king Magnus Barelegs, who had designs on the city. At its largest extent, that wall ran with as many as 19 gates punched through it, though almost all of them have long since vanished.
One genuine survivor still stands: St Audoen's Arch, the only one of the original medieval gateways left standing anywhere in the city, right along the walk's route. Walking its line with a dedicated guide - rather than a quick stop on a broader tour - gives you real time to spot it and the handful of other wall fragments worked into the buildings around it.
