There's genuine scholarly debate over where Temple Bar actually gets its name. The most widely cited theory points to Sir William Temple, who had his house and gardens here in the early 1600s while serving as Provost of Trinity College. A second theory traces it to a district of the same name in London. A third, more colourful account claims it comes from a 'bar' once placed on the area by a Jewish community leader. What's less disputed is the area's physical origin: the marshy land along the Liffey's old shoreline was progressively walled in and reclaimed, with the street itself following the line of that original riverbank.
