Dublin Castle is the real spine of this two-hour sweep, and your guide has the academic grounding to do it justice. The site started out as a Viking fortress in the 930s; after the Normans seized Dublin in 1169, King John ordered a permanent stone castle built in 1204, a project that took 26 years to complete. Only one of the original four round towers, the Record Tower, survives today.
From there the tour moves through the layers that followed - the Anglo-Norman rebuilding of the city's churches and walls, the strict 18th-century planning that gave Dublin its Georgian terraces and squares, and the slow, uneven road toward independence that the castle itself quietly embodies: it stood as the seat of British rule in Ireland for seven centuries, right up until its handover to the new Irish state in 1922.
Because your guide is a working history postgraduate rather than a scripted narrator, expect the kind of connective detail a textbook skims past - how Viking street names still survive underfoot, why the Wide Streets Commission reshaped whole neighbourhoods in the 1700s, and how the threads of early Christianity, colonisation, and literature all run through the same two-hour walk.
