George's Street Arcade, one of the real stops on this walk, opened in 1881 as the South City Markets - Dublin's first purpose-built Victorian shopping centre, designed by the British architects Lockwood & Mawson. A devastating fire gutted it in 1892, destroying not just the stalls but the shopkeepers' homes above them; it was rebuilt by an Irish architect and contractor and reopened on 13 September 1894, and its red-brick Victorian shell still stands today as one of Europe's oldest surviving covered markets.
With ten tastings built into the route - spanning Irish chocolate, fish and chips, hearty stews, and Guinness - this is the deepest tasting count found in this market, woven through George's Street Arcade and other genuinely local spots. One reviewer put it plainly: guide Ruairi "made sure we had the best possible introduction to the local food scene... stopping at a wide range of restaurants, shops and pubs."
