Trinity College Dublin was founded by royal charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1592, built on the site of a disbanded Augustinian priory and modeled on the collegiate universities of Oxford and Cambridge - making it, by a wide margin, Ireland's oldest university. A few minutes' walk away, Dublin Castle sits on a site with an even longer history: a Viking fortress stood there from around 930 CE, and after Brian Boru's forces overthrew Viking rule in 1014, King John of England ordered the much larger stone castle built in 1204 that still partly survives today.
