A private guided walk through Dublin's medieval history, stopping at real medieval-era sites across the old city. Discover the medieval history of Dublin on this private guided walking tour, taking in Dublin Castle, the Chester Beatty Library, St. Patrick's Cathedral, St. Audoen's Church, and Cook Street.
St. Audoen's Church, erected around 1190, is the oldest parish church in Dublin still standing and still in use - the sole surviving medieval parish church in a city whose other old churches have long since been rebuilt or replaced. Beside it on Cook Street stands St. Audoen's Arch, the only gateway from Dublin's medieval city walls to survive into the present day, inserted through the old Hiberno-Norse wall in the 13th century and restored in 1976 - a real, walkable piece of the fortifications that once ringed the entire city.
This private walk builds its route specifically around that medieval layer of Dublin, also taking in Dublin Castle (begun in 1204 on an earlier Viking site) and the Chester Beatty Library, a genuinely world-class manuscript and artefact collection assembled by mining magnate Sir Alfred Chester Beatty and now housed in the castle grounds - most visitors who come for the castle itself never make it inside.
The route also stops at St. Patrick's Cathedral, founded in 1191 and home to the grave of its most famous dean, the writer Jonathan Swift, who held the post for over 30 years until his death in 1745 - a specifically medieval-and-after focus that sets this walk apart from a general highlights overview.
