This walk stays focused on Dublin's genuine Old Town rather than widening out to a full city overview. The area's roots go back to around 841, when Viking settlers built a trading post called Dyflin around a dark tidal pool - Dubh Linn, or 'black pool' - at the point where the River Poddle meets the Liffey, right near Wood Quay. That settlement, and a separate Gaelic one upriver, together gave the modern city both its English and Irish names.
Centuries of rebuilding followed - Norman stonework over Viking foundations, church reconstruction after church reconstruction - and a surprising amount of that layered history is still legible if you know where to look, from surviving fragments of medieval wall to street names that still describe long-vanished medieval trades.
Because the tour is built specifically around this one compact, dense pocket of the city rather than a broader sightseeing loop, there's real time to slow down and actually look at what's underfoot, rather than passing through the Old Town on the way to somewhere else.
