The Molly Malone statue was unveiled on Grafton Street in December 1988 as part of Dublin's millennium celebrations, with the city's then-Lord Mayor also declaring 13 June to be Molly Malone Day. She's based on the folk song about a fishmonger wheeling her wheelbarrow through Dublin's streets - though whether a real 17th-century Molly Malone ever actually existed is genuinely disputed among historians, despite claims made at the time of the statue's unveiling that historical records had confirmed her story.
