About This Tour

A private walking tour connecting Kilmainham Gaol's role in the 1916 Rising to the General Post Office, the Rising's headquarters. Your guide links Kilmainham Gaol, where Rising leaders were imprisoned and executed, to the GPO Witness History exhibit on O'Connell Street, the building the rebels used as headquarters during Easter Week 1916.

This tour draws a direct line between two sites most visitors see separately: Kilmainham Gaol, where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were imprisoned after the fighting ended, and the GPO on O'Connell Street, the building they had held as their headquarters during Easter Week itself. The executions at Kilmainham ran from 3 to 12 May 1916, with 14 of the 16 executed rebels shot there, including all seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

James Connolly's execution, on the final day, 12 May, is a particularly sobering detail: his wounds from the fighting were so severe that he had to be shot while tied to a chair. Your guide handles this part of the story directly and respectfully, rather than skimming past it.

Kilmainham's own history didn't end there, either - the Free State Army used it again during the Irish Civil War of 1922-23 to hold Republican prisoners, roughly 600 of them, before it was finally decommissioned as a prison in 1924. The GPO Witness History exhibit, opened for the Rising's 2016 centenary, rounds out the visit with an immersive look at the week that connects both sites.
