"Little Jerusalem" is the name Dubliners gave to the area around the South Circular Road and Clanbrassil Street once home to the city's largest Jewish community, many of them Lithuanian immigrants who settled there from the late 19th century onward. At its heart was the Beth Hamedresh Hagadol Synagogue, built in 1917 inside two adjoining terraced houses on Walworth Road, which could hold a congregation of around 150 people.
As Dublin's Jewish population drifted to the southern suburbs - accelerated by heavy emigration in the 1950s - the synagogue fell out of use around 1970 and sat locked for nearly fifteen years. A dedicated committee formed in 1984 brought the building back to life as the Irish Jewish Museum, which opened on 20 June 1985, fittingly inaugurated by Chaim Herzog, then President of Israel, who had grown up in Dublin himself.
This private, 5-star-rated walking tour uses that building and its surrounding streets to tell a genuinely under-told layer of Dublin's history - distinct from the city's more commonly told Viking, medieval, and independence-era narratives, but no less a real part of how the city grew.
