About This Tour

A private walking tour covering the complex history of the Irish Republican Army and Irish Brotherhood, with stops at the James Connolly Memorial, Custom House, and GPO. On this private walking tour you'll discover the complex history of the Irish Republican Army and Brotherhood, with stops at the James Connolly Memorial, the Custom House, and the GPO (exterior).

This walk takes on a genuinely complicated story - the Irish Republican Army and its predecessor, the Irish Republican Brotherhood - and one of its real, physical landmarks is the Custom House, burned by the IRA on 25 May 1921. It was the largest single IRA operation of the entire War of Independence: the building, one of the most important British administrative offices in Ireland, was completely destroyed along with its records, at a real cost of nine lives (five IRA volunteers, four civilians) and roughly 80 captured.

That attack turned out to be a tactical disaster as much as a symbolic victory - it badly weakened the IRA's fighting strength in Dublin - but just six weeks later, the two sides in the conflict agreed a truce, effectively ending the War of Independence.

The route also stops at the James Connolly Memorial and the GPO's exterior, tying the IRA and Brotherhood's story back to the 1916 Rising that preceded it. Your guide handles this history - which runs through armed conflict, executions, and civil war among former allies - with the same sober, factual approach throughout, rather than romanticising any side of it.
