Dublin takes its name from the Irish Dubh Linn - 'black pool' - a tidal pool where the River Poddle met the Liffey, first recorded in the Annals of Ulster in 841, the very year Viking raiders built a longfort beside it. That pool is long since filled in, but historians place its site in a garden directly behind Dublin Castle - the real Dubh Linn Gardens this tour walks you to, a genuinely overlooked spot that gave the whole city its name and that most day-trippers never hear mentioned.
