This full day leans heavily on Trinity College's Long Room Library, the breathtaking 65-metre main chamber of the Old Library that holds 200,000 of the college's oldest books beneath a vaulted ceiling raised in 1860 to add a second gallery of shelving. It's paired with Dublin Castle and St. Patrick's Cathedral, Ireland's largest church and National Cathedral, founded on the site of a legendary St. Patrick baptism and restored at considerable expense by the Guinness family between 1860 and 1900.
St. Patrick's has one especially famous former Dean: Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, who led the cathedral from 1713 to 1745 and is buried just inside its entrance. In 1742, a combined choir from St. Patrick's and Christ Church gave the first-ever public performance of Handel's Messiah.
Lunch lands at The Fumbally, a real, well-regarded Dublin café rather than a vague 'own expense' stop, before the day closes at Kilmainham Gaol - a 19th-century prison that held leaders of the 1916 Rising before it was decommissioned in 1924, and one of the most visited historical sites in the city. Covering it properly, rather than as a drive-by, is what sets this itinerary apart from a shorter highlights tour.
