The General Post Office on O'Connell Street is still a working post office today, but it carries real scars from 1916: armed rebels led by Patrick Pearse and James Connolly seized the building on 24 April that year and read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic from its steps, and the British Army eventually set it ablaze to force the rebels out. You can still see genuine bullet pock-marks today on the GPO's front columns and on the nearby Daniel O'Connell monument further down the street.
