The walk through Dublin's Old Town, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and Dublin Castle is really building toward one destination: Trinity College's Old Library. Designed by Thomas Burgh and built between 1712 and 1733, it's the oldest surviving building on the whole campus - and its main chamber, the Long Room, is a genuine showstopper, a 65-metre barrel-vaulted hall lined with 200,000 of the Library's oldest books and rows of marble busts.
The Long Room wasn't always this dramatic, either. It originally had a flat ceiling and shelving only on its lower level; by the 1850s the collection had outgrown the space entirely (Trinity had been granted the right to a free copy of every book published in Ireland and Britain), so in 1860 the roof was raised to fit a full second gallery above.
At the end of the visit comes the Book of Kells itself - an illuminated gospel manuscript created around 800 AD, almost certainly by Christian monks on the Scottish island of Iona, in the ornate calligraphic style known as insular majuscule. It's been in Trinity's keeping since 1661, when it was brought here for safekeeping in the wake of Cromwell's raids on Irish religious institutions, and it remains one of the most famous surviving manuscripts from early medieval Europe.
