Howth takes its name from the Old Norse word for 'Head,' and it's been a working fishing port since at least the 14th century - still an active tier-2 fishing harbour today. The Baily Lighthouse that marks its headland was built in 1814, 134 feet above the sea; its fog bell was added in 1853 after 80 lives were lost nearby when the Queen Victoria sank, and it stayed staffed by keepers until automation in 1996, making it the last lighthouse in Ireland to go unmanned.
Before the coastal drive out to Howth, your guide Éamon - a top-ranked Dubliner with 94 real reviews at a 5.0 average - takes you through city landmarks including Kilmainham Gaol (built in 1796, and the site where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were later executed) and Temple Bar.
A real quoted review highlights the genuinely local pub stop along the way: 'visiting a real pub that Dubliners go to, not a touristy one, and having a most delicious bowl of Irish stew and a pint of Guinness' - the kind of detail that's easy to miss without a driver who actually lives here.
