Rather than retracing the standard tourist-trail version of 1916, this private tour pushes into sights many general history tours skip, including Kilmainham Gaol - the prison where the Rising's leaders were held in the days before their executions. Your local host's insights are built to go past what's already in the history books, filling in detail the standard version tends to smooth over.
The Rising itself ran from Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, when rebels seized the General Post Office and declared an Irish Republic, through to their surrender on 29 April after days of fighting and British artillery fire. The aftermath was swift and harsh: 16 of the Rising's leaders, including all seven signatories of the Proclamation, were executed by firing squad at Kilmainham over the following weeks.
This tour is upfront about handling that part of the story honestly rather than glossing over it - the executions, including that of the badly wounded James Connolly, who was shot while tied to a chair, are presented as the real, difficult history they are, not softened for comfort.
