The 1916 Easter Rising began at midday on Easter Monday, 24 April, when Patrick Pearse stood outside the General Post Office on what's now O'Connell Street and read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic on behalf of the rebels' self-declared Provisional Government. The GPO itself became rebel headquarters for the week that followed, home base for five of the seven men who had signed that Proclamation.
This tour weaves that history into a walk through Dublin Castle, Trinity College, and Christ Church Cathedral - sites with their own much older stories, but ones that also sat directly in the path of, or played a real role in, Easter Week itself. Dublin Castle in particular had stood as the seat of British rule in Ireland since the 13th century, which is exactly what made the Rising such a direct challenge to it.
