This tour is built around watching rather than driving. Elk, bighorn sheep, moose, marmots and pikas are among the animals regularly seen in Rocky Mountain National Park, and a spotting scope turns distant slopes into something worth stopping for.

Moose are a recent arrival. Colorado wildlife officials released moose into North Park in 1978 and 1979, and the animals spread from there; some argue moose were here earlier, but the modern population traces to those releases.

The park itself dates to 26 January 1915, when Woodrow Wilson signed the act that created it.
