Rocky Mountain National Park was created when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Rocky Mountain National Park Act on 26 January 1915. Its signature drive, Trail Ridge Road, opened in 1932 and climbs to 12,183 feet, the highest paved through-road in the United States.
That road is the reason a sightseeing tour can reach the park's highest accessible point without hiking. Bear Lake sits at about 9,450 feet beneath Hallett Peak and the Continental Divide.
Wildlife is part of the draw. Elk, bighorn sheep, moose, marmots and the occasional pika are among the commonly seen animals, though sightings are never guaranteed.
