The drive up Pikes Peak is for travellers who want to control their own pace at the top. The highway reaches the same 14,115-foot summit as the railway, but by road, with stops on the way.
A small piece of trivia sets it in context: the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, which reaches about 14,140 feet, edges it out by 25 feet as the highest paved road in North America, so Pikes Peak Highway is the second.
