The cog railway began with a mule ride. Zalmon G. Simmons, a visitor to the area, found the summit so memorable that he founded the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Company in 1889; the first train reached the top on 30 June 1891. The line runs about 8.9 miles to the 14,115-foot summit.
It is also a modern story. The train shut down in 2018 for a complete renovation, and the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway reopened in 2021 after a roughly $100 million rebuild.
Garden of the Gods rounds out the day. The red sandstone landscape was named in 1859 by surveyor Rufus Cable, who called it a fit place for the gods to assemble. Charles Elliott Perkins bought land there from 1879 and kept it open to the public; his family gave it to Colorado Springs in 1909 on condition it stay a free public park.
