The museum began with one man's cabin. Edwin Carter assembled one of the most comprehensive collections of Colorado fauna in his home in Breckenridge. Carter died in February 1900, and the museum was incorporated on 6 December 1900 to house his collection in a fireproof building.
Today it holds over one million objects across natural history and anthropology. A guided visit helps in that size of building, since the first hours can blur without a plan.
The skip-the-line admission is a practical advantage on busy days.
