The mountain has a new name and an important story. In September 2023 the U.S. Board on Geographic Names renamed Mount Evans as Mount Blue Sky, at the request of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, because the old name honoured territorial governor John Evans, who authorised the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre. Sources give the summit as about 14,265 to 14,271 feet.
The Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway reaches about 14,140 feet, making it the highest paved road in North America, and it is seasonal.
Red Rocks completes the day. The amphitheatre was dedicated on 15 June 1941 after construction began in 1936, designed by Denver architect Burnham Hoyt, with the Civilian Conservation Corps and WPA supplying labour. The Beatles played there on 26 August 1964, a concert that did not sell out.
