This hike climbs in steps, with each lake a reward. The route starts at Bear Lake at about 9,450 feet, passes Nymph Lake and Dream Lake, and ends at Emerald Lake at about 10,110 feet, around 2 miles from the trailhead.
Altitude is the main factor in how hard it feels. Even at a modest gain, the thin air at over 9,000 feet slows most people, so a guided pace helps.
The park around it is protected thanks to the Rocky Mountain National Park Act, signed by President Wilson on 26 January 1915.
