Cuenca's Casas Colgadas — the 'Hanging Houses' — are hard to date with full precision, and it's worth knowing why: only three of what were once many similar structures survive today, and because they've been rebuilt and restored multiple times over the centuries, historians generally place their origins somewhere between the 13th and 15th centuries, with the clearest documentary evidence pointing to the 15th century. The earliest visual record of them comes from a 1565 panoramic painting of Cuenca by the Flemish artist Anton van den Wyngaerde, which already shows houses cantilevered dramatically over the edge of the Huécar river gorge much as they appear today.
Since the 1960s, the Hanging Houses have housed the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español (Museum of Spanish Abstract Art), a genuinely unexpected pairing of medieval architecture and 20th-century art that has become one of the more distinctive small museums in the country.
Cuenca's real draw for this tour is precisely that it isn't Toledo or Segovia — it's a smaller walled city built into a dramatic gorge, UNESCO-listed in its own right for its historic fortified town, and visited by a fraction of the travelers who make the more famous day trips from Madrid.
