Crater Lake fills the caldera of Mount Mazama, a volcano that erupted and collapsed about 7,700 years ago. At 1,943 feet deep (some sources say 1,949) it is the deepest lake in the United States, and rain and snow alone fill it, which helps explain its colour. Wizard Island, a cinder cone, rises from the western side, while the Phantom Ship, a jagged lava formation, sits near the southern shore.
Your four hikes each show a different side of the park. Mount Scott is the highest point in the park at about 8,930 feet, with a 2.5-mile trail and a small fire lookout on top. Garfield Peak is a 1.7-mile climb above Rim Village that looks down on the lake and the Phantom Ship. Plaikni Falls, reached from the Pinnacles Road, is an easy one-mile out-and-back walk that is accessible for much of its length. The Rim Drive loop itself runs 33 miles.
The Klamath people traditionally tell of the lake as a place where spirits contested, and tales such as Llao, a spirit said to dwell in Llao Rock, are part of that tradition. They are cultural stories, not geology, and your guide can share them alongside the volcanic history.
