Sun Notch is a green meadow on the east side of the rim where a short 0.9-mile loop leads to an overlook of the Phantom Ship, the jagged lava island near the lake's southern shore. It is a quieter place than the busy Rim Village lookouts, and a good place to understand the scale of the caldera.
The Rim Drive loops about 33 miles around the crater, and your day links both rims. The lake itself, created when Mount Mazama collapsed some 7,700 years ago, is about 1,943 feet deep and relies on snow and rain alone, which is why its water is so clear and blue.
Rim Village, where lunch is arranged, is the park's main visitor hub and the starting point for trails such as Garfield Peak. Allow time to simply sit at the rim; the view changes noticeably with light and weather.
