Punta Sur Ecological Reserve covers roughly 247 acres at Cozumel's southern tip — reef, beach, mangrove lagoon, and low coastal forest bundled into one protected area that's been open to visitors since the 1990s. Rather than treating it as a quick photo stop, this tour spends real time across the reserve's different habitats instead of rushing from one landmark to the next.
The jungle ruin here is El Caracol (sometimes called the Tumba del Caracol), a small Maya structure built during the post-classic period. It's been the subject of more than one romantic theory over the years — that its odd window placement functioned as a kind of storm-warning whistle, or that it once served as a navigational lighthouse — but the more accepted archaeological reading is simpler: it was a temple, not a functioning beacon or weather instrument.
Laguna Colombia is the reserve's other real highlight — a mangrove-fringed lagoon that's home to American crocodiles and a long list of resident and migratory birds, watched from elevated observation towers and a guided boat ride included in the admission price, never approached from the water itself.
The Celarain Lighthouse (Faro de Celarain), dating to around 1901, caps the visit — a working lighthouse that doubles as a small nautical museum of artifacts tracing Cozumel's maritime history, with a climb to the top rewarded by genuinely panoramic Caribbean views. The park's beaches are also a real nesting ground for loggerhead and green sea turtles between roughly June and October, protected under a conservation program that's been running for decades and recording hundreds of nests most seasons — one more reason the quiet beach at the end of this tour is more than just a place to relax.
