Cozumel's reputation as a diving destination has real roots going back decades. Jacques Cousteau, already one of the world's most famous underwater explorers, visited the island in 1961 and was reportedly so taken with Palancar Reef that he called it "paradise" — a widely repeated endorsement that's often credited with helping put Cozumel's reefs on the global diving map, even though the specific Cousteau-filmed documentary sometimes attributed to that visit is itself more legend than documented fact. What's well established is that the island's reefs were already drawing serious attention from the diving world by the early 1960s, long before Cozumel became the mainstream destination it is today.
The Discover Scuba Diving format used for this experience is a real, PADI-standardized introduction to the sport, not a shortened certification course — no certification is issued at the end of it. After a land-based briefing of roughly 20 to 30 minutes covering the basics of the equipment and safety, participants (minimum age 10, per PADI's own guidelines) get into the water with an instructor at a close, one-on-one ratio to practice core skills before easing into open water. If you go on to pursue a full PADI Open Water Diver certification later, the skills and time logged during a Discover Scuba session typically count toward that training rather than starting you over from zero.
The dive site itself is part of Cozumel's real Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef, protected within Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park since 1996. It's an unusually gentle place to try diving for the first time — warm, clear, current-moderated water over a living reef system home to well over 1,000 recorded marine species — rather than the colder, murkier conditions many first-time divers elsewhere have to start in.
