Cozumel's east coast is a genuinely different place from the calm, resort-lined west side most visitors see. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which shelters the island's popular beach clubs and dive sites, runs along the western shoreline only, leaving the east coast exposed to the full force of the open Caribbean Sea. The result is a windward stretch of raw, undeveloped scenery with powerful waves and strong rip currents that make most of it far better suited to sightseeing than swimming — local safety guidance is blunt about it, often describing this coast as one to look at rather than one to swim in.
El Mirador is one of the coast's most striking viewpoints — a rocky outcrop shaped by the relentless pounding of Caribbean swells into a natural sea arch and jagged coral-rock formations, with open-ocean views in every direction. It's one of the better spots on the island for dramatic photography precisely because of the same wave action that makes the water unsafe to enter nearby.
Chen Rio is the exception that makes the rest of this coastline bearable for a swim: a natural rock formation curls around the cove and breaks the open-ocean swell before it reaches the beach, creating one of the only genuinely sheltered, swimmable spots on Cozumel's entire east side. It's a popular rest stop for exactly that reason, letting visitors experience the wild coastline up close without the real risk found along most of the rest of it — before the loop finishes back on the calmer west coast for the tequila and mojito tastings, lunch, and snorkeling.
