Colonia's historic quarter is one of Uruguay's few UNESCO World Heritage listings, inscribed in 1995 for the way Portuguese, Spanish, and later styles sit side by side in one small street grid. Its founding dates to 1680, when the Portuguese settled on the Río de la Plata opposite Buenos Aires to challenge Spanish control of the estuary.
