About This Tour

Colonia del Sacramento was founded by the Portuguese in 1680, when Manuel Lobo landed with several hundred soldiers and craftsmen on the Río de la Plata, directly across from Buenos Aires. Spain and Portugal traded control of it for generations, which is why its streets blend Portuguese, Spanish, and later styles; UNESCO inscribed the historic quarter in 1995.

The Real de San Carlos, a little outside the old town, is a surprise: a Moorish-style bullring inaugurated in January 1910 as part of a seaside resort complex that also had a hotel-casino and a ferry dock for visitors from Buenos Aires. Bullfighting was banned in Uruguay in 1912 after only a handful of fights, and the arena sat abandoned for roughly a century before restoration work in the 2020s.
