The Bacino San Marco — the wide basin of open water in front of St. Mark's Square — is where the Grand Canal meets the lagoon proper, and it's traditionally been Venice's grandest civic stage: the place where state ceremonies and naval processions played out for centuries, with the Doge's Palace and the domes of St. Mark's Basilica forming the backdrop to it all.
Just across the water sits Giudecca, an island whose name is older than it looks — it was originally called Spinalunga, and historians still debate how it came to be called Giudecca at all, with theories ranging from a corrupted reference to land "judged" and allotted to noble families in the 9th century, to a disputed link to a Jewish community that may never have actually settled there in any documented numbers at all.
This roughly 50-minute private tour covers both in one quiet sweep of the southern lagoon — the only real boundary between Venice and the open Adriatic is a thin line of barrier islands further out — with custom routes to Murano-Burano-Torcello or the Lido-Pellestrina-Chioggia stretch available on request if you'd rather spend the time seeing more of the lagoon's quieter edges instead.
